The main ways to get from Hanoi to Sapa are the overnight train to Lào Cai plus about 35 km by road, a sleeper or cabin bus, a limousine van, or a private car. Road services reach Sa Pa town in about 5 to 6.5 hours on the operators’ timetables, while Vietnam Railways’ three nightly trains take 7 h 35 min to 7 h 50 min just to reach Lào Cai, arriving between 05:20 and 06:27. Bus berths start at 340,000 VND and van seats at 400,000 VND (about US$13 and $16), against 475,000 VND (about US$19) for a train berth on most dates, and road departures outnumber trains: G8 Open Tour alone lists about 20 buses a day.
Sa Pa, often written Sapa, is a mountain town in Lào Cai province. Train times and fares below come from Vietnam Railways’ official timetable and road prices from each operator’s website, all checked on November 2, 2026; dollar figures use Vietcombank’s buying rate that day, 25,580 VND to the US dollar.

How far is Sapa from Hanoi?
By rail, Lào Cai station is 294 km (about 183 miles) from Hanoi in Vietnam Railways’ timetable. Figures for the last leg vary slightly by source: the Vietnam News Agency puts Sa Pa 33 km (about 20 miles) from the city of Lào Cai, and Chapa Express about 35 km from the station. By road, most of the route is the 245 km (about 152 miles) Nội Bài to Lào Cai expressway, which opened in September 2014, Tạp chí Công Thương reported, and the road from Lào Cai up to Sa Pa is just over 30 km. Since September 2023, a 13.8 km link road over the Móng Sến viaduct has let expressway traffic skip the three-level hairpin section of the old Highway 4D, VOH reported.
Hanoi to Sapa train: overnight to Lào Cai
No railway reaches Sa Pa, so a Hanoi to Sapa train ticket is a ticket to Lào Cai. A third nightly pair, SP15 and SP16, started on October 10, 2026, Báo Lào Cai reported; passengers getting off at Lào Cai station from January to September 2026 were up about 25 percent on a year earlier. All three Hanoi departures appeared on every date sampled from November 2 to December 31, 2026; the lookup listed no trains yet for January 1, 2 or 15, 2027.
Hanoi to Lào Cai train timetable
| Train | Leaves Hanoi | Leaves Gia Lâm | Arrives Lào Cai | Time on board |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SP15 | 21:45 | 22:10 | 05:20 | 7 h 35 min |

| SP7 | 22:40 | 23:05 | 06:27 | 7 h 47 min |
These are the November 15, 2026 times shown by the railway’s official Giờ tàu, Giá vé page, which the dsvn.vn menu points to; checked November 2, 2026. Gia Lâm station, 5 km out, is a second boarding point. Timetables change, so confirm your date and departure station; Chapa Express’s FAQ still shows SP3 arriving at 05:55.
Train fares and berths
On SP3, the official fare table lists 475,000 to 646,000 VND for a berth in a four-berth compartment, 646,000 VND in a two-berth one and 801,000 VND in its VIP version; on SP7, four-berth fares run 475,000 to 517,000 VND and two-berth 646,000 VND. Upper berths cost less than lower ones. Fares include insurance and, the lookup notes, can vary with booking time, type of passenger and berth position. Checked on November 2, they were the same for every SP3 and SP7 departure sampled from November 3 to December 30, but lower for December 31, from 462,000 VND (about US$18). No fares are shown for SP15 or SP16.
Premium tourist carriages also run: Chapa Express, which lists SP3 and SP7, sells cabins online and at its office in Hanoi station (120 Lê Duẩn street), runs lounges there and at Lào Cai station, lists two restrooms per carriage and wants passengers at the station 45 minutes to an hour ahead, or earlier.
From Lào Cai station to Sa Pa
Chapa Express puts Sa Pa about 35 km from Lào Cai station, by car over a mountain pass. No page checked gives a station-to-town time, but Sapaking’s timetable has its vans in Lào Cai at 11:00 to 11:30 and in Sa Pa at 12:00 to 12:30, about an hour apart.
- Public bus 01 links the square outside Lào Cai station with Sa Pa’s central church. Its latest published timetable, from October 2021, lists 10 departures a day from Lào Cai, from 05:50 to 15:30. Báo Lào Cai reported it still running in January 2025, with a three-day break over Tết. No official fare was found.
- Chapa Express transfers: Chapa Express sells transfers from Lào Cai station up to Sa Pa at extra cost; its driver meets each booked passenger outside the station with a name sign. Its Lào Cai lounge opens at 06:00 and has showers.
Rain can block the road: heavy rain from June 30 to July 3 and on September 29 and 30, 2025 brought slopes down in the Lào Cai to Sa Pa toll station area, blocking the road in places, Luật sư Việt Nam reported in February 2026. By then the repairs were complete, though the province had told the toll road’s operator to keep working on a permanent fix for the slide site.

Can you fly from Hanoi to Sapa?
No. Sa Pa has no airport, so there is no direct flight. A Sa Pa airport is planned beside the expressway in Bảo Hà commune (formerly Cam Cọn), where ground was broken on March 3, 2022. In early March 2026, Lao Động found only a resettlement area on the site: two tenders in 2022 drew no investor, the main works had not started, and provincial project managers said they hoped to find one in 2026. That report gave no opening date, and no newer report was found as of November 2, 2026.
How to book safely
Book trains on Vietnam Railways’ official site, dsvn.vn, which has an English version, or at station ticket windows and authorized agents. Ahead of Tết 2025, Sài Gòn Giải Phóng also listed vetau.com.vn and the MoMo, VnPay, ZaloPay and ViettelPay wallet apps, while a rail company quoted by VOH warned that unofficial sites typically added 8 to 10 percent. Báo Văn Hóa reported in 2019 that lookalike domains charged several times the real fare and had misled some buyers, foreigners in particular. The Kiểm tra vé (check ticket) page on dsvn.vn confirms whether a ticket is valid; board with the ticket and original identity papers, such as a passport.
When to go and what can disrupt the trip
Vietnam’s national tourism authority picks September to November for Sa Pa, with March to May as a mild alternative; for winter conditions, see does it snow in Sapa. Storms can halt the trains: after storm No. 3 in September 2024, the SP4 to Hanoi was canceled on September 8, the line reopened to freight on September 15, and passenger trains SP3 and SP4 returned on September 23, Báo Lào Cai reported. A year later, heavy rain from the remnants of storm No. 10 (Bualoi) halted passenger trains between Hanoi and Lào Cai on September 29 and 30, 2025, and the SP4 that left Lào Cai on the evening of September 29 had to turn back at Phố Lu, the paper reported. Berths toward Hanoi cost less, as shown on November 2, 2026: from 362,000 VND (about US$14) on SP4, or 352,000 VND on December 31, and 202,000 to 291,000 VND (about US$8 to $11) on SP8. By road, Sapa Express leaves Sa Pa at 07:30 and 15:00 (28-seat bus) and 14:00 and 22:00 (cabin bus).

- A berth in a train compartment: the night train, or a private carriage for a lounge at Lào Cai.
- Motion sickness: no option avoids the climb; every route ends on a mountain road up from the Lào Cai area.
